Windows 10 Bids Us Farewell: What You Need to Know and Your Options

August 14, 2024

As we approach October 14, 2025, the end of an era looms for Windows 10 users. Microsoft will officially cease support for this beloved operating system, nearly a decade since its launch. This means no more software updates, security patches, or technical support. But don’t worry – your Windows 10 PC won’t suddenly stop working.

Here are your options moving forward:

Upgrade to Windows 11

If your computer is eligible, upgrading to Windows 11 is the easiest and safest option. Windows 11 has matured over the past three years, addressing early issues and adding new tools. However, some older PCs may not meet the security requirements for this upgrade.

Conveniently Microsoft allows Windows 10 users to check if their device meets Windows 11 system requirements before installing the update. Run the test to see if your PC is ready for it.

If it passes, reach out to your IT administrator for further assistance with upgrading. For our clients, that means opening a ticket with our helpdesk to get started.

Additionally, in the coming months we will be reaching out to each client individually to go over the strategy for an upgrade.

Stick with Windows 10

Your computer will continue to function after support ends, but it will no longer receive updates. This could make it more vulnerable to malware and other security risks. You can consider using additional security software solutions like Malwarebytes or Sophos to respond to any security incidents. However, this strategy will be purely responsive and will only address incidents after the fact.

Updates and security patches are part of a proactive approach to device security, which means you are protected before an attack even occurs.

Buy a New Computer

If your PC can’t upgrade to Windows 11, it might be time to consider a new one. The market is ripe with high-performing, AI-powered Windows PCs. For those on a budget, refurbished Windows PCs are a viable option.

We typically recommend replacing any system that is older than 5 years old, or may need new technology such as an NPU (Neural Processing Unit) for AI tasks.

As we bid farewell to Windows 10, it’s essential to plan your next steps to ensure a smooth transition. Whether you upgrade, stick with what you have, or explore new horizons, the choice is yours. For our clients, we recommend upgrading to Windows 11 to get the latest in technology and security upgrades for your business users.
