In April 2024, Google will implement new guidelines to enhance Gmail security by rejecting a percentage of non-compliant mass emails. This measure targets senders of unwanted bulk messages to personal Gmail accounts, requiring them to authenticate outgoing emails and avoid unsolicited content. The initiative aims to increase user control over their inboxes and reduce phishing risks by ensuring sender authenticity.

Additionally, bulk senders must incorporate a one-click unsubscribe feature in all commercial emails by June 13. The enforcement of these rules will be gradual, starting with temporary errors on non-compliant emails. The guidelines apply only to personal Gmail accounts, with a threshold of 5,000 daily messages from the same domain classifying a sender as a bulk emailer.

Google Workspace accounts are exempt, but all senders must comply with the new requirements. This move is part of a broader effort to combat spam and enhance online security, including WhatsApp’s updated spam-blocking features and Virgin Media O2’s partnership with Hiya to eliminate fraudulent calls. Overall, these changes reflect a growing industry focus on protecting users from spam and cyber threats.
