The Ransomware Business Is Booming, Even As Enforcers Shut Down Major Players

In the ever-evolving landscape of cybersecurity, 2023 marked a significant year for the proliferation of ransomware attacks. Despite concerted efforts by global law enforcement to dismantle major cybercriminal operations, the incidence of ransomware attacks surged. A report by Palo Alto Networks' Unit 42 revealed a staggering 49% increase in the number of victims reported on ransomware leak sites, with nearly 4,000 instances documented.

This alarming rise is attributed to the exploitation of zero-day vulnerabilities—security loopholes unknown to software developers until it's too late. One notable attack involved MOVEit Transfer software, which led to the compromise of thousands of organizations worldwide. The US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) estimated the breach affected over 3,000 US entities and 8,000 globally.

The United States bore the brunt of these attacks, with industries such as manufacturing, professional and legal services, and high-tech sectors being the most affected. The report also highlighted the emergence of 25 new ransomware leak sites offering 'ransomware as a service,' although some showed signs of cessation with no activity in the latter half of the year.

Despite the grim statistics, there were victories against ransomware syndicates. Law enforcement's efforts led to the disruption of notorious groups like Hive, which extorted $100 million in ransom payments, and Ragnar Locker, known for targeting critical infrastructure. These successes underscore the ongoing battle between cybercriminals and the guardians of our digital safety.
