The Wi-Fi Alliance has officially announced that they are now certifying devices that support Wi-Fi 7, said to be the next generation of wireless internet. With this certification, Wi-Fi 7 devices are guaranteed to work together and in 2024 we will see new products like phones, laptops, and routers that are ready for the new standard.
The alliance says in its announcement that Wi-Fi 7 will be better than existing standards for things like high-bandwidth streaming and low-latency wireless gaming. This represents huge speed and efficiency gains compared to even Wi-Fi 6E.
The certification is important to ensure that Wi-Fi 7 devices are guaranteed to work well with other Wi-Fi 7 devices. Wi-Fi 7 offers double the channel bandwidth- from 160MHz to 320MHz- versus the fastest devices on the Wi-Fi5, 6 or 6E standards, and that means the potential for wireless downloads over 2 gigabits per second.
There are other bits and bobs of the new standard that the alliance says will mean more efficiency, throughput, and stability, and Wi-Fi 7 devices will be backward-compatible with previous versions of Wi-Fi. Read the full article by The Verge to get more details.
